Green Lantern Poster Concept

Description

I've been working on this for some time now. As a graphic designer by trade, I thought I'd put together a GL movie poster for giggles. I was drawn primarily to the most recent DC Entertainment films, Superman Returns, Batman Begins and The Dark Knight. I employed their minimalist approach, using the main character in a way that personifies him and/or his abilities. I chose to put Hal in space, floating above Earth as a bright beacon, almost as if he's defending the planet from an imminent threat.

For the tagline, I tried to avoid something cliché or too obvious. The first thought is always "use the oath", but I wanted to focus more on his journey to becoming a hero, and the fact that the ring chose him over every single person on the planet. The tagline is also a tie-in with Superman and Batman, one being born with incredible powers and the other being trained for many years to the height of human perfection.

I wanted the film logo to be classic and simple but also have a slight flare to it, so I used a semi-serif typeface that I feel captured the look perfectly while not going overboard. I also wanted to add the cast, similar to the Batman posters, since most of the important Green Lantern characters have actors attached to the roles now.

The body was rendered in Daz3D and the costume was created in Photoshop. I based the costume off of the concept art for Kilowog and Tomar Re that was leaked. While I don't think it's the best Green Lantern costume, I would be happy enough with it, I think it stays true enough to the comics, there's no silly armor or anything that just seems flat-out wrong, although, my kingdom for a pair of white gloves...

Overall I'm incredibly happy with how the poster turned out, I may tweak it here and there later, but for now I think it accurately portrays the mood of the film and the incredible power wielded by the Green Lanterns, not to mention, I think it fits in rather well with the rest of the DC movie posters. Perhaps when we have some real pictures of Ryan in costume, I'll revisit the poster and update it. Until then, we can only wait and anticipate.
